Can There Be Earthquakes In Germany

Earthquakes in Germany

Seismically Active Region

Not As Extreme As Other Parts Of The World

Earthquakes in Germany are relatively low by international standards, but the region is the most seismically active and experiences the strongest quakes in the country. A total of 88 earthquakes with a magnitude of four or above have struck within 300 km of Germany in the past 10 years, with an average of 8 per year. The earthquakes are mainly located at depths between 5-20 km, with the majority of the seismic energy released around 10 km.

The seismic network GEOFON, run by the GFZ, provides seismic data and rapid earthquake parameters. Besides GFZ, several other partner institutions are involved in earthquake monitoring in Germany. The extent and frequency of natural events such as storms, floods, and earthquakes in Germany are not as extreme as in other parts of the world.
