Auburn Hires Hugh Freeze as Head Football Coach

Former Ole Miss Coach Returns to SEC After Liberty Stint

Matt Luke to Serve as Interim at Ole Miss

Former Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze has been hired as the new head football coach at Auburn University. The move comes after a thorough search process following the firing of Bryan Harsin. Freeze, who resigned from Ole Miss in 2017 following a pattern of personal misconduct, will take over the Tigers program immediately.

Freeze, 53, compiled a 39-25 record at Ole Miss from 2012 to 2016. He led the Rebels to three bowl games and was named SEC Coach of the Year in 2014. However, his tenure was marred by off-the-field issues, including NCAA violations and allegations of personal misconduct.

After leaving Ole Miss, Freeze spent three seasons as the head coach at Liberty University. He led the Flames to three consecutive bowl games and a 20-12 record. However, his hiring at Auburn has been met with some controversy due to his past at Ole Miss.

Auburn Athletics Director John Cohen said in a statement that he believes Freeze is the right man to lead the Tigers program. "Hugh Freeze is a proven winner who has a passion for developing young men both on and off the field," Cohen said. "We are confident that he will lead our football program to new heights."

Freeze will inherit an Auburn team that finished 5-7 in 2022. The Tigers have not won an SEC Championship since 2010 and have had just one winning season in the past five years.
